Winfred “Wint” Henry Hartman, 93, passed away 1/17/2018 at his home in Mesa, Arizona. He was born 5/23/1924 in Monterey, Indiana to Albert Hartman and Aurelia Fox, he was the second youngest of 11 children.

He graduated April 1943 from Monterey High School and on June 8, 1943 was drafted into the service and joined the U. S. Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison. He attended basic training at Camp Sutton, NC. Wint was proud to serve in WWII from 12/29/1943 – 12/29/1945 where he was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He was a medic for the 2nd Platoon of B Company, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, 3rd Army, in Europe including the Battle of the Bulge, he was nicknamed “Doc” by his fellow soldiers. In 2006 his service in WWII was documented/published for 5 consecutive weeks in the Pulaski County Journal.

In 1957 he married Gladys Margaret Wilson and they built a home and lived in Monterey most of their lives. Together they raised five children: Ruthann(David) MN, Robert(Cathy) AZ, Rebecca(Derric) TX, Richard(Lisa) IN, and Ryla AZ. Wint was the Postmaster of Monterey, Indiana for 27 years. He was an active member of American Legion Post #399 and involved in the community. He also enjoyed fishing the “tippi” and working in his huge vegetable garden. Wint and Gladys retired in 1988 and in 1990 moved to Arizona where he tended to his beautiful citrus trees and enjoyed spending time with his siblings. He was such a handyman – always there for his neighbors and helped Bob build a cabin in Overgaard, Arizona. He was loved for his storytelling and teasing and it didn’t matter how many times one heard those stories they were always humorous. Wint’s caregivers never tired of listening to his interesting life stories, what a memory he had!

Wint is survived by his 5 children, 7 grandchildren – Alan, Molly, Anthony, Andrea, Clare, James and Ryan, and 1 sister, Mildred Simpson of Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 6 sisters, son-in-law David Thorson and wife Gladys (deceased 5/30/17).

Our Mom and Dad had long wonderful lives filled with adventures, love from family and friends and will be truly missed. We were blessed to have such great parents.

Services will be held 1/22/2018 at 11AM with visitation starting 10AM at Mountain View Funeral Home, Mesa AZ. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Wounded Warrior Project or Hospice of The Valley.
