Norma Jean (Spatz) Smith began her eternal life with God and reunion with her beloved husband Bill on August 19, 2018.

Norma was born January 18, 1922 in Bruno, Nebraska to Bessie (Jaros) and Edward Spatz (Bruno’s Postmaster) as their third child and second daughter.

Graduating from David City High School, she briefly taught school. Norma met the love of her life, Wilfrid Jacob Smith. They married April 14, 1941 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, Bruno, NE. They had three children, remaining devotedly married for 57 years until Wilfrid’s death December 4, 1998.

Norma was secretary for various organizations including Nebraska’s Boys Town, U. of N. Medical School (Omaha), and Creighton University Dental School.  In 1961, the family moved to Scottsdale, AZ.  She became executive secretary to the Scottsdale Baptist Hospital president (now Scottsdale Memorial, Osborn campus) retiring 23 years later, after being Medical Records Director, Medical Staff Coordinator, and Quality Assurance Director.

A life-long, devout Catholic, Norma was active at Mesa’s Holy Cross Church including as a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound and in Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Our Lady of the Desert Court #2164 Mesa, where she was the Court’s Vice Regent and Regent. Her many accomplishments included establishing the Court’s Prayer Shawl Ministry.

She is preceded in death by her husband (Wilfrid Smith), parents (Bessie and Edward Spatz), sister Gertrude Votava (Clare), brother, Edward Spatz, Jr. She is survived by her sons Michael, Patrick (Patricia Anne), and daughter Rosemary (Smith) Neal, six grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Amiable and gracious, Norma brought love and joy to all she met and will be deeply missed by her adoring family and friends.

Arrangements by Sunrise Funeral Home, Prescott, AZ and Mountain View Funeral Home, Mesa, AZ:
Memorial Mass on Monday, August 27, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1244 S Power Rd, Mesa, AZ. Reception to follow at the church with interment afterwards at Mountain View Cemetery 7900 E. Main St, Mesa, AZ.
