It is with profound sadness that we announce that Lois Kirby Street, beloved mother, wife, grandmother and friend slipped away on Saturday November 12th, after a brave battle with respiratory illness. She is survived by her devoted husband of 27 years, Dave Street; four daughters, Janne (Gord Pearce), Sheena (Mark Prendergast), Jill (Roy Matthew) and Sharon; and her three step-sons, Mike (Judy) Peter (Janice) and Paul (Cindy) Street. She was fortunate to have twelve grandchildren: Rebecca and Alec Pearce; Liam and Shannon Prendergast; Eric, Mark and Lauren Mathew; David, John and Amy Street; and Curtis and Hannah Street. She had enormous pride for her children and grandchildren.
Lois was born to Fred and Ethel Kirby in Whitemouth, Manitoba and passed her school years in Kenora, Ontario. She attended the Manitoba Normal School in Winnipeg, and taught in Richmond Hill, Toronto, before moving to Calgary with her first husband Leslie Duncan.
Lois and her three siblings; Jean Julian (Dick), Calvin Kirby (Amy) and Russell Kirby (Pat) recently gathered for a spontaneous family reunion – an occasion that she deeply treasured. There were memories of musical family events – a history that instilled a lasting enjoyment for the piano, which she was found playing most afternoons.
Lois had a quiet and elegant way with people, making them feel special and valued, and that love and loyalty was returned in abundance. Her renowned connection with the animals in her life brought her great enjoyment, and demonstrated her deep compassion. She had an understated strength and bravery, and was an outstanding horsewoman – riding into her 80th year around the land that she cherished.
Lois’ grace, elegance and warmth will be missed by all who knew her.
Lois passed away in Mesa, Arizona where her body will be cremated. The funeral service will be held on Saturday November 26th at 2:00 pm at the Cremona Congregational Church, followed by a reception.
