Obituary

Dr. Gerald "Gerry" Slemmer, 74, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, distinguished educator, legendary football coach, and mentor to generations, passed away on October 13, 2026, in Arizona. His life was defined by an unwavering commitment to family, education, leadership, and helping others achieve more than they believed possible.

Born in Beech Grove, Indiana, Gerry grew up in West Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Wilson High School in 1970, where he distinguished himself in football and wrestling. He attended Pasadena City College before transferring to Arizona State University on a full football scholarship, graduating with distinction in physical education in 1974. He later earned a master's degree in education from ASU in 1976 and a doctorate in education from Widner University in 1997.

Gerry began his teaching career at Poston Junior High School in Mesa, Arizona, before returning to Pennsylvania in 1976. He taught at Wilson Central Junior High School and Wilson Senior High School, where he also coached football and wrestling. As Wilson's head football coach, he built a championship tradition, leading the Bulldogs to 15 consecutive winning seasons, eight league titles, two district championships, and a remarkable 129–42 record. His accomplishments earned him induction into the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2004.

Yet Gerry's greatest achievements were never measured in wins and losses. He believed that athletics and education were opportunities to develop character, instill discipline, inspire confidence, and prepare young people for life. His influence extended far beyond the classroom and football field.

Gerry continued his distinguished career in educational leadership as principal of Wilson Senior High School and assistant superintendent of the Wilson School District. In 2004, he returned to Arizona, serving as principal of Red Mountain High School in Mesa until his retirement in 2014. He later returned to education as principal of Leading Edge Academy, a charter school in Gilbert, Arizona, before retiring permanently.

A man of deep faith, integrity, compassion, and conviction, Gerry possessed a commanding presence, a generous heart, and an enduring belief in the potential of others. His leadership
inspired respect, his humor brought joy, and his example left a lasting impression on countless students, athletes, colleagues, and friends.

Above all, Gerry treasured his family. He is survived by Kathy, his beloved wife of 55 years; his son, Jacob R. Slemmer and wife Rhonda of Reno, Nevada; his daughter, Cynthia A. and husband Freddie of Chandler, Arizona; his cherished grandchildren, Aislyn Martin of Delray Beach, Florida, and grandsons Jakob Hendricks and Julian Martin of Chandler, Arizona; and his twin brother, Harold Slemmer and wife Laurie of Chandler, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Gary L. Slemmer of Reading, Pennsylvania.

Gerry will be remembered not only for the championships he won or the schools he led, but for the lives he changed, the values he instilled, and the love he shared.

His greatest legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the people he inspired, and the countless lives made better because he was part of them.

A celebration of Gerry's life will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Mountain View Cemetery, 7900 E. Main Street, Mesa, Arizona 85207. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a service at 11:00 a.m.
