Donnie (Don) Gene Lane, of Oceanside, CA, previously a long-time Arizona resident, passed away August 13, 2018 at the San Diego VA Hospital at age 66.
He was born January 21, 1952 in Lepanto, Arkansas to Eif and Annie Lane, the ninth of 13 children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Burt Henry, Hershel Ray, Eif Edward, Riley Wayne, Austin Clifford, and sister Eva Mae Larson.
He is survived by his wife Cathy, daughters Christine Gillies, spouse Ian Gillies, Dawnn Lane, son Eric and step-sons Ryan McDermott, spouse Melissa, and Christopher as well as grandchildren Andrew McDermott, Ali Wilson, spouse Morgan Ward, Nicolette and Patrick McDermott, Jacob Wilson, Nate and Jace Gillies. He is also survived by brothers LeRoy, spouse Shirley, Eules Earl, Roger Allan, spouse Maria, and sisters Helen Louise Zelinka, spouse Carl, Rosie Elizabeth Call, Lillian Lynn Morse and sisters-in-law Patsy Lane and Shirley Lane. He also has many, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He served in the Marines from 1969 to 1976 in Viet Nam, the Philippines and Hawaii. He became a Staff Sergeant in December of 1975. Upon discharge from the service he returned to Arizona where he was a prison guard at the Florence State Prison and Perryville Prison for several years. He also worked at Phoenix Job Corps for 25 years. He had a special bond with young adults and children, especially his grandchildren.
He loved camping, traveling and will be remembered for his unconditional love for family and friends, his indomitable spirit, and sense of humor. His favorite phrase was “That’s what she said.” He was larger than life and taken too soon.
