Bruce Andrew Wilson was born on Nov. 29, 1933, on a farm outside Salina, KS, and was the youngest of 11 children. He passed on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, in Mesa, Arizona.
Bruce graduated from Salina High School and went to his 65th class reunion in June, 2016. He and his first wife Pat had six children: Rick, Greg, Laura, Doug, Cindi, and Mark, all before he was 23 years old. Jobs were hard to come by and soon the Wilson family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1957 to find work. He ended up selling shoes in downtown Grand Rapids, first at Dean’s Shoes, Herpelschimer’s Department Store, Engler’s Shoes, and Hoekstra’s. From shoes Bruce sold insurance for Prudential and Detroit Mutual. Eventually, he retired and he and Pat moved up to Pickeral Lake for several years where his oldest son Rick and wife Marcia owned “Little Switizerland”, a resort there.
Years went by and Bruce and Pat came west to Lake Havesu where one of his brothers, Don and wife Barbara lived. Bruce and Pat finally separated, were divorced, and he decided to head south and east, settling in Apache Junction. He started working at several local golf courses and found his way to Painted Mountain Golf Course in north Mesa. That’s where he met and married Ruth Reil, originally from Washington State, who had moved to Mesa in January 2001. They moved to Fountain of the Sun, were very active in golf, the variety show, and many other activities. Bruce also loved to play Bridge and never said no to playing whenever and wherever he could. Once you met Bruce, you were his friend forever!
He is survived by his wife Ruth, six children, daughter-in-laws: Marcia, Sheila, and Janet, 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren; brothers, Marvin & Don; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was loved by all who knew him and will be dearly missed.
